Castle of Șiria
Trip: 19 km north to Șiria, up to the castle about 400 m, about 1.0 - 1.5 hours.
The first written record of the castle of Șiria dates back to 1318, so it was probably built in the 13th century, after the Tatar invasion. As a major end castle, it changed hands frequently on the outskirts of the Turkish occupation, as it rose to become a target for the armies of the Transylvanian Principality.
Bohus Castle
The Castle was built between 1824 and 1838 in neoclassical style, largely using stones from the castle of Șiria, and also contains Görgey's desk, on which Artur Görgey signed the treaty of unconditional surrender of the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848 on 13 August 1849.
Address: Șiria, Strada Regiment Infanterie nr. 162 Opening hours: upon request.
Maria Radna - the church of grace and ordeal
How to get there: Nine kilometers along the main E68 Arad - Deva highway, the Franciscan church of Lipova is a famous place of pilgrimage. Its icon was bought in 1668 by Bosnian Catholic merchant George Vrichonassa from an Italian merchant and decorated the altar of the old chapel. In 1695, after the recapture of Lipova, the Turks set fire to it too, but the image remained intact in the fire. When the church burned down, the burning shingles were carried by the wind across the Mures River and fell on the Turkish camp. The Turks' clothes and tents were burned and the fire could not be extinguished until the person who started it was killed. One of the Turkish warriors swam across the river to destroy the shrine, the galloping horse's hooves pressing the rock of Mount Radna like hot wax. The warrior broke his neck. The hoofprint is preserved to this day on the rock fixed to the wall of the church, with the inscription in verse underneath.
Another interesting legend is that a servant girl wanted to steal some of the precious stones adorning the shrine. She stood up on the altar to reach the stones, but froze and could not get down. She was not able to free herself until the next morning when everyone was on their knees praying for her.
Starting from the right side of the church, you reach the bottom of Calvary
Șoimoș Castle
Access: 11 km on the main road E68 Arad - Deva, to the parking lot at the northern end of Lipova
Hiking: from the parking lot to Șoimoș Castle 650 m, 100 m difference in altitude, approx. 0.5 hours
Șoimoș Castle was built by King Paul on a rocky hill to the east of the village between 1272-75, after the invasion of the Tatars. In 1552, it was occupied by the Turks, who were driven out in 1688 by the armies of the imperial general Caraffa after a long siege. The castle was abandoned by the military a hundred years later, when its destruction began. A small domed tower can be seen on the triangular western side of the inner castle, and to the north, the old multi-storey tower. On the north side of the courtyard is the carved Renaissance-style palace, which contains the rooms once occupied by Queen Isabella.
